Each SMART Team School Registration includes 1 poster at ASBMB* (terms and conditions apply).

You can support more than one SMART Team at no additional cost, but if that team would also like an abstract, model, and poster review, please include "Additional Team" in your order.

If you would like multiple copies of a model for a team, please include the “Additional Model” in your order.

Check out our new SMART Teams perks, like poster printing and micro-models!

SMART Teams is a program for students who want to dig deeper into biomolecular science by researching, designing, and presenting a 3D protein model that tells a structure‑function story. Registration gives each team a complete, model‑centered experience from research through presentation.

Each SMART Team registration includes:

  • Access to the four‑phase SMART Teams program and digital resources.
  • Use of Jmol and modeling tools to explore and design protein structure.
  • One full‑color 3D print of the team’s finalized model (extra print options are available, see below).
  • Support from 3DMD staff on model design (with optional Model Consultation video call), abstract development, and poster preparation.
  • Eligibility for conference opportunities such as the ASBMB undergraduate poster sessions*, or the SMART Team Symposium (location TBD).
  • Opportunity to publish abstract and poster on 3D Molecular Designs’ website.

No SMART Team is complete without an advisor; your registration assumes there is an educatorfacilitator guiding the student team using provided materials.

SMART Team Registration & Additional Perks

SMART Team Registration Fee - $750

  • Access to all four SMART Team phases and supporting materials.
  • Use of Jmol, molecule builder, and modeling resources for student exploration and design.
  • Direct support from 3DMD staff for phased model design, abstract drafting, and poster refinement.
  • One four‑color 3D print of your team’s model
  • ASBMB poster for 1 team* (see ASBMB terms and conditions)
  • Opportunity to present at 3D Molecular Designs SMART Team Symposium

Additional Team - $375

  • Direct support from 3DMD staff for phased model design, abstract drafting, and poster refinement for 1 additional team
  • One four‑color 3D print of your additional team’s model
  • Opportunity to present at 3D Molecular Designs SMART Team Symposium

Additional Copy of a Model - $250

  • Receive an additional copy of a team’s model

Micro-Models - $250

  • A set of micro-models (all the same model). You specify the quantity, like the number of SMART Team members, and we will scale the models to fit on one build plate

Printed Posters - $35

  • We will print your poster and transport it to ASBMB or Symposium

Model-First Milestone

To keep the model at the center of the SMART Teams experience, we use a “modelfirst” milestone for conference opportunities.

Teams that submit a finalized model design (Phase 2) before submitting their abstract (Phase 3) are eligible for reserved ASBMB poster slots at the annual conference. Meeting this modelfirst milestone signals that:

  • The team’s abstract and poster will be built around a completed model design.
  • Students are prepared to use the model as the main storytelling tool during the poster session.

Model Specifications

Our 3D printers support up to four colors in a single print, not including the standard blue Nterminal and red Cterminal endcaps. We highly encourage students to paint their models after printing and are happy to provide painting tips.

As part of your SMART Team registration, you also have access to an optional Modeling Consultation with Leah Krevitt, our 3D Print Specialist. Leah is available to meet with teams via Zoom to discuss model design choices, printing options, and new multi-color printing technology. After this consultation, additional color options may be available for your team’s model, depending on design and feasibility.
Email SMART@3Dmoleculardesigns.com to schedule your meeting.

*ASBMB Terms and Conditions

ASBMB has confirmed that 3DMD will have 10 poster session spots available at the ASBMB conference for SMART Teams. Because demand exceeds the number of spots, we are implementing the following selection and participation rules:

  • Eligibility cap per school: Only one SMART Team per school may be selected to attend ASBMB in a given year.

  • Alternating-year rule: A school may send a team to ASBMB every other year.

    • Schools that send a team to ASBMB in one year will not be eligible for an ASBMB poster spot the following year.

    • In their “off” year, schools are still required to register as a SMART Team to remain in the program.

    • During off years, those teams are qualified and encouraged to attend the SMART Team Symposium instead of ASBMB.

  • Selection within eligible schools: If a school is eligible for ASBMB in a given year (i.e., they did not attend the previous year), their team will be considered for one of the 10 spots.

    • Spots will be allocated based on:

      • Order of registration, and

      • Meeting the model-first milestone

  • If spaces remain: If any ASBMB poster spots remain after eligible schools are selected, schools that attended ASBMB in the previous year may become eligible. These teams will then be considered based on meeting the model-first milestone.

  • Continued registration required: Teams must continue registering as SMART Teams even in years they are not eligible to attend ASBMB. This keeps the program running and ensures those teams can be considered for future ASBMB opportunities when they become eligible again. Teams that are ineligible for ASBMB can still present at the SMART Team Symposium (Date & Location TBD).
